Press Release

Two Rooms is proud to present La Leyenda Negra, a collection of functional sculptures designed by Luis Alonso Sánchez. La Leyenda Negra, translated as “The Black Legend” in English, references the lore that surrounds Sánchez’s home of Tijuana, Mexico. He reflects while it is true that Tijuana is a city where pleasure and indulgence are celebrated, its myth of vice extends far beyond the border into the American imagination. This body of work invites the viewer into a dilemma of truth and exaggeration. Presented with appliances and furniture that unlock consumption, we are tempted to participate. Sánchez’s welded grills are designed to cook oysters, a steel chair includes a built-in beer opener, and a wall-mounted chain can be dragged around to uncork a bottle of wine. Materials such as tar, scrap metal, and screws reflect his continued use of common place objects found in buildings and on the street. Through his retelling of La Leyenda Negra, Sánchez invites us to break the rules of art, to sit, touch, and taste.
